Book Review: Worthy of Legend by Roseanna M. White

Pirates. A hidden journal. Arthurian legends. A lost island kingdom. High stakes treasure hunting. A handsome lord that loves chocolate. All these ingredients and more go into making Worthy of Legend an epic conclusion to Roseanna M. White’s Secrets of the Isles series!

I’ve enjoyed each of these treasure hunting, island adventures, but this third book ended up being my favorite! I’ve always been fascinated by the story of King Arthur, so when Arthurian legends and possible buried artifacts came up at the beginning of the story… I was totally hooked! Regular pirate treasure was exciting enough in the previous two books, but something related to King Arthur? That takes the stakes of the hunt, and the excitement as a reader, to a new level!

Every step of the journey is fraught with conflict and danger for our large ensemble of characters, and it kept me wondering how the treasure hunt would play out in the end. Let me tell you, I wasn’t at all disappointed! THAT ENDING! Ah, I loved it so much.

As mentioned, the cast of characters populating the Scillies is quite extensive by the time you reach this third book in the series. If you don’t really like large casts of characters to keep up with, it could feel overwhelming. But for me, I love it. Roseanna does such a great job with her characters that somehow, they are all unique memorable in some way or another.

I’ve loved the couples that paired up in each book, but I think this set is my favorite! Emily–the rich girl who seems quiet and self-absorbed but actually totally isn’t–and Bram–the overprotective ogre who is actually as sweet as the chocolate he’s addicted to, and possesses the heart of a true knight of honor. They were so good together for so many reasons! The way Bram set out to take care of Emily and defend her, while still giving her room to see she can also take care of and defend herself–it made me sigh inside. As with the other books in the series, a “down-stairs” character also has a storyline of their own. This time, it was Emily’s maid, Thomasina Briggs. I loved her story just as much as Emily, to be honest! I won’t spoil who she ends up with, but it was perfect!

If you’re looking for one last grand summer adventure before the official start of fall, look no further than Worthy of Legend! Romance, humor, adventure, mystery, and action–it has it all! Bravo to Roseanna on another great book and another stellar series. I gotta say it’s sad say farewell to these characters and the world of the Isles of Scilly (which I never knew existed until these books!), but I also can’t wait to see what she does with her next series!

PS: I still maintain that this series would be perfect for a tv show! You have a gorgeous, unique setting, a cast of lovable characters, and three story arcs (one from each book) that can be a season on their own. A reader can dream, right? Maybe one day it will come true!
