Review: Saving Miss Everly by Sally Britton

Since joining the #Bookstagram community, I have been introduced to many new authors, especially in the Indie publishing or “small” publishing house world. One of those such authors is Sally Britton. Sally writes sweet, clean Regency era romances and her Inglewood Series has been on my to-read list since discovering her books.

Typically I like to read series in order, even if they don’t have to be read in order to understand them. However, in the case of this series, Book 3, Saving Miss Everly, was the one to catch my eye the most. Something about stories set in the Caribbean, or sea-faring stories in general, has always felt so exciting and romantic to me. I think this is rooted in my childhood when I fell in love with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis. So take the fact that this is a Regency tale set in the Caribbean and add to it the fact that the characters get shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, and I definitely had to make this my first Sally Britton read.

Pretending she’s her twin gets complicated when Hope is shipwrecked with a handsome castaway. When rescue comes, will she risk her heart to confess the truth or will they part forever?

Pretending to be her sister, Hope Everly finds an adventure at last. The Caribbean’s warm waters and tropical islands fulfill nearly all her dreams. When an excursion to visit another island with a naturalist expedition is interrupted by a storm, Hope is stranded on a desert island where she and her fellow castaways are dependent on a handsome stranger for their survival.

Alejandro Córdoba, trapped and alone on the island long enough to give up all dreams of rescue, knows nothing of what has become of his war-torn homeland or his family. When he finds the beautiful Miss Everly washed up on the shore, along with her companions, he does not know if their arrival is a blessing or a curse.

Hope’s behavior, acting one way with Alejandro and another with her friends, further confuses things when they begin to fall in love. If rescue ever comes, will telling Alejandro the truth mean losing him forever?

I think I made a good choice in starting with this book in the series. Saving Miss Everly lived up to all of my expectations and was the perfect “escapism” read. I listened to it on Audible and didn’t have a problem engaging with it, unlike some books I’ve listened to. The narrator did an excellent job with the characters’ voices–especially Alejandro’s Spanish accent.

Speaking of Alejandro, he is everything a good romantic hero should be, though his staunch honor made me want to smack him in the head a couple times. But I suppose he wouldn’t be him without that honor. His relationship with Hope grew quickly, but by the end of the book, it did feel believable. They had just enough obstacles and difficult decisions to make their love feel hard won. Oh, and that moment on the beach at the end… **sigh** I won’t say anything more so I don’t ruin it, but it was the perfect sigh-worthy, heart-melting scene!

4/5 Stars for Saving Miss Everly! I’m definitely looking forward to reading or listening to the rest of Sally’s Inglewood Series now. If you love a good Regency romance with a dash of adventure thrown in I highly recommend this book.

Note: This is not a Christian book, but it is a clean and “proper” romance.
