Careena Campbell’s debut novel, Free, is the sweet and uplifting story of a young girl trapped at sea and the sailors whose lives she impacts forever. I must admit, I struggled to connect with it at times because I felt like I was hovering over the story, not quite feeling immersed. I wanted to know more of what made each person tick, to know more of their motivations and their backgrounds, and know more of the setting. I felt like some aspects of the story could have been leaned into more. BUT I really appreciated the heart that went into this book. Careena clearly loves the Lord very much and strived to write a story that glorifies Him. In the end, I truly enjoyed seeing how Ruth grew as a person and found her place to belong. The ending of the book was so sweet and heartwarming!
I would say Free is the perfect read for preteens and younger teens, which I believe is Careena’s intended audience. It really is hard–to me anyway–to find good, clean books for this age range–stuff that is interesting for them, easy to read, but also uplifting and godly. If you’re a parent looking for a good read for your preteen/teen, or you fall in that age range yourself, I would recommend this book! 3.5 Stars!
