For the Book Lovers Reviews

Book Review: Flight of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse

Oh my goodness! I loved this book so much and I could NOT put it down! Sometimes in a series, the first book is awesome, but the second one can’t quite measure up to the magic of the first–this series is not that way. While I enjoyed book one, Mark of the Raven, book two totally blew that one out of the water and turned my casual love of this trilogy to a serious LOVE!

Selene Ravenwood, once the heir to House Ravenwood, is now an exile. On the run and free of her family’s destiny, Selene hopes to find the real reason her family was given the gift of dreamwalking. But first she must adapt to her new life as wife to Lord Damien Maris, the man she was originally assigned to kill.

While adjusting to her marriage and her home in the north, her power over dreams begins to grow. As the strongest dreamwalker to exist in ages, her expanding power attracts not only nightmares but the attention of the Dark Lady herself.

With a war looming on the horizon and a wicked being after her gift, Selene is faced with a choice: embrace the Dark Lady’s offer, or search out the one who gave her the gift of dreamwalking. One path offers power, the other offers freedom. But time is running out, and soon her choice will be made for her.

While I read book one pretty quickly, for some reason I was really worried that this second book would disappoint me, or at least be a slower read for me. But boy was I wrong ???. I devoured this book in less than a week, which is fast for me, especially since this isn’t a short book. From the first chapter, I was obsessed!

I came to love Selene much more in this book and enjoyed seeing her character grow so much as she struggled to figure out who she is meant to be and why House Ravenwood was given the gift of Dreamwalking. And Damien!! Ahhhh, Damien. **sigh** He was great in book one, but I love him even more now! Seeing him home among his people that he loves so much, and seeing his people’s love for him in return, endeared him to me so much. Selene and I fell in love with him together LOL ??. Speaking of–watching their relationship blossom into love… Eeek! It just made me feel so giddy and happy inside. They are such a great fictional couple!

Compared to book one, this book had a lot more going on–more action, more character development, more intrigue, more world building, and of course, more exploration of Selene’s gifting and the being called the Light. The scene where she finally discovers who the Light created her to be was soooo beautiful and powerful! The “Christian” elements of this series were pretty subtle in book one, so I loved how much more they have come to play into the overall story now. Definitely so well done on the author’s part.

A solid 5/5 Stars for Flight of the Raven! I’m really looking forward to book three, Cry of the Raven, and plan to read it soon! If you like Christian fantasy at all, you NEED to read this series!
